!!SPOILER ALERT!! Black Panther: Erik Killmonger Should Be King?

++++++!!SPOILER ALERT!!++++++++

A few things before I start, Black Panther was great.  It is up there with Spider-Man: Homecoming, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Captain America: Civil War, to name a few.  So, I’m not trying to knock this movie at all.  Merely pointing out a interesting “decision” by the Ryan Coogler (Director and Co-Writer).  Everything I’m about to state is based on my memory of the movie.  As flawed as it may be, something to consider in your reaction.

King Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) was illegally prevented from finishing his rule.  Former King T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman [incredible last name]) ended his reign via military coup.  Huh….What you mean military coup?

Rewind many scenes before, I remember specifically that the Wakanda’s law allowed Killmonger (not King yet) to legally challenge T’Challa to be the ruler of Wakanda.  The challenge being a fight to the death or tap out.  As Killmonger was about to perform his death stroke, Zuri (the incredible Forest Whitaker) illegally enters the combat arena blocking the blow.  Mind you, this blow would have killed the helpless T’Challa.

In swift justice, Killmonger kills Zuri for breaking a cardinal law.  Instead of savagely killing T’Challa in front of the entire kingdom and his family, he sacrificially tosses the helpless man into the waterfall.  He spared the King’s life.

What you mean spared?  Yes it was a tall waterfall.   But I’m sure there are quite a few Wakandians that have survived the fall.  I bet they were not a King/Black Panther either.

At this point, T’Challa is no longer the King.  He has been beaten and should at least gave this new King Killmonger a chance.  Nope, he is reunited with his family and ex through the help of the mountain clan.  He is miraculously restored back to 100% health.

T’Challa immediately plans a military coup against King Killmonger.  During the planning stage, the mountain clan that saved his life refused to be part of his military coup.  Yet, he continues on his illegal misson.

T’Challa reintroduces himself by ripping through a Wakanda Air Force transport ship most likely killing an innocent pilot.  King Killmonger has the full backing of one tribe and the royal guard, yet he continues his military coup.  The royal guard eventually joins the military coup adding turmoil to the situation.

T’Challa cripples King Killmonger in the final match.  Being offered a chance to live, King Killmonger decides to kill himself instead of wanting to live through Wakanda receding back into secrecy.  King T’Challa reigns again!  His first act is to open a shelter in a large city.

Pretty weak initial response to pay homage to deceased King Killmonger.  At the minimum, he should have opened one in every major world city.  I mean it’s Wakanda, they have all the money!

For those who have seen the movie, your first line of defense was that King Killmonger was trying to take over the world.   He was a bad man.  From my view point, we had very little to determine if that was the case.

Sure sure, King Killmonger was planning on giving advance Wakanda weaponry to supporters around the world.  The goal to allow black people to rule.  Wait what…this is starting to sound like a pretty noble objective.

But Jimmy, King Killmonger would have done it through force.   If my memory serves me correct, there were only like maybe 15 ships transporting this Wakanda weaponry.  Does 15 ships (roughly caring a single semi truck normal load of basically spears with a force push) enough to take over the world (especially with the Avengers around)?

Maybe, King Killmonger was sending this small number of ships to certain places in Africa.  I started to think about this combined with the feeling of seeing Wakanda on first fly in.  Africa united under one government/ruler, just think of the possibilities…  Erik Killmonger should be King?

Hector and the Search for Happiness | Pegg charmingly melts your heart

– Please remain in your seat until flight comes to a complete stop..

Bless me Father, for I have sinned.  My last blog post was 464 days ago.  Since my last post, there has honestly been several movies worth the key strokes.  Alas, the lazy virus took the best of me.  Luckily, I had a 24-hour energy boaster drink that allowed me to write these words..

Psychiatrist Hector (Simon Pegg) finally sees the bore that is his life.  He abruptly decides to leave his perfect girlfriend Clara (Rosamund Pike) to go on a global journey in search of happiness.  Thus unfolds the adventure of a life time.

As expected, you will experience Pegg’s amazing comedy.  But, you will be surprised by his skills as an actor.  His ability to transfer his scene’s emotions to you are just unbelievable.

Adding to Pegg’s performance; you are treated with a great soundtrack, artistic use of Hector’s travel journal, and the great cameo performances (including Jean Reno, Christopher Plummer, Stellan Skarsgard, and Toni Collette).  Hopefully, this will be enough to entice you to add this to the must see list.  Because by the time you reach the credits, you will be filled with a warm light.

o0Oo0Oo0000000O goes the tornado Oberhofer. Why tornado? Well, it is the only adjective that can describe Oberhofer’s live performance. Let me paint you a picture.

Drummer and bassist pounds dark clouds into frame. The guitars raise the winds. Xylophone strikes sporadic lighting across the landscape. Brian Oberhofer voices rings all beautifully into a storm. You are just memorized by the peaceful storm. Then, a tornado comes out of nowhere signaled by Brian’s wild spinning. Oberhofer just letting out pure sweet power. As quickly it comes, the tornado ascends into the clouds. Oberhofer goes back to a peaceful storm.

These moments of perfect surprise lined the entire Oberhofer set. During a song, guitar wireless connected Brian walks out the back door. A few seconds pass in which everyone is thinking, is he going to come in from the front door? Suddenly, Brian comes quickly walking into the front strumming his guitar. As cheesy as it sounds, it was quite incredible.

Or during the last song, Brian yells out names of each band member a bids us all a goodnight. A decent crowd barely claps, some shoot one more song, Oberhofer agrees, Brian says “we forgot to play this one”, and proceed to belt out their big hit oOoO. But this time when Brian yells out names, Oberhofer leaves the stage.

For $10 ticket, I would have paid $30. So, I made up the difference by buying a Time Capsules II LP which is fantastic in itself. Now, I can listen to their storm pop whenever my little heart desires. Bravo Oberhofer, I look forward to our next encounter.

The Shipping News | Spacey and Hallström doing it right

Jesus h christ, how in the hell did I miss The Shipping News movie? Let me add, how did the world miss this movie? The movie had a reported box office of $11.4 million (RottenTomatoes.com) while the budget was $35 million (IMDB.com).

I was 22 when it was released on January 2002. Lets just say I wasn’t the most productive person, but I always made room for movies. You must choose wisely for tickets are expensive for the movie theater. So, my time was prob taken by the following movies:

  • Ocean’s Eleven
  • The Royal Tenenbaums
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
  • A Beautiful Mind
  • Black Hawk Down
  • The Count of Monte Cristo

On top of the competition; The Shipping News had bad reviews from The Rolling Stone, US Today, New York Times, etc (currently 55% on RottenTomatoes.com). Now we know why this one fell through the cracks. Why did it take till March 2014 to finally see this movie?

Well, this little video streaming site Netflix calculated that I would give this movie 4 out of 5 stars. After some investigating, I found that Lasse Hallström (The Cider House Rules, Hachi: A Dog’s Tale) directed an incredible star studded cast (Kevin Spacey, Julianne Moore, Judi Dench, Cate Blanchett). Play button goes click.

The very timid Quoyle (Kevin Spacey) loses the horrible wife/parents. To make a fresh start, Quoyle decides to accompany his aunt to their ancestral home in Newfoundland. He just has no idea how much his life will change.

Hallström beautifuly directs the superb Kevin Spacey on the portrayal of a man overcoming many challenging situations throughout his life. Laced throughout the story, supporting characters slowly surface their own pain. No matter how hard it gets, you can see Hallström’s rainbow in the distance. You just got to keep on truckin’

P.S.  I think Julianne Moore was too sexy for her role.

Mutual Benefit

Mutual Benefit

On February 4th 2014, I cruised to the great Local 506 in Chapel Hill, NC. Mutual Benefit headlines my first concert of the year. There couldn’t have been a better start to my concert year.

Welcomed by a modest crowd, the small stage was filled by Jordan Lee (singer/guitar/keyboard), his sister Whitney Lee (backup vocals/keyboard), bassist, guitarist, violinist, and percussionist. Each flower petal of sound perfectly fanned out surrounding Jordan’s delicate voice creating a beautiful fantasy pop flower. I found myself being overwhelmed into a closed eyed swaying trance.

If his music wasn’t enough, Jordan’s witty humor was just icing on the cake. Throughout the concert, he would whisper sweet nothings such as “thank you for your enthusiasm.” drawing many sporadic giggles.

Mutual Benefit was like floating down a river on a warm sunny day. Just what I needed after a long day at the office.
